The Alabama Grocers Association presented Alabama Agriculture and Industries Commissioner John McMillan with its Spirit of Alabama award at its annual convention in late July.

The award, which was presented by Alabama Grocers Association President Ellie Smotherman Taylor, is given in honor of McMillan’s support of food safety, the food industry and for his support of products grown, manufactured and processed in Alabama.

McMillan is a six-generation Alabama native with roots in Baldwin County. His life’s work has centered on agri-business, forest products, wildlife protection, natural resource management and the protection of personal property rights. From 1974-1982, he served in the Alabama House of Representatives and chaired the Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resource Committee before serving as executive vice president of the Alabama Forestry Association for over 20 years. In November, he was elected to the post he now

Feral/wild swine population is growing at an alarming rate in Alabama. They destroy native plants and habitats, create erosion problems, degrade water quality and compete with native wildlife for food. In addition, they can cause massive crop damage, transmit diseases to domestic livestock, and adversely affect timber production through destruction of seedlings and young trees. Feral swine have been sighted in most of the 67 counties in Alabama and can reproduce at an alarming rate. Sows can begin breeding at 6 months of age, and produce up to four litters per year with each litter consisting of four to twelve piglets.

Alabama landowners have an opportunity to receive inancial and technical

assistance through the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service’s (NRCS) Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) and the Environmental Quality

Incentives Program (EQIP) to trap and properly dispose of feral/wild swine. For more information, contact your local NRCS ofice listed in the telephone book under U.S. Department of Agriculture or online at http://ofices.sc.egov.usda.gov.
