GENERAL POLICIES

1.Only one person from each professional discipline, trade or business is permitted to join a BNI chapter. Membership Committees of each chapter have final authority relating to classification conflicts.

2.Members must represent their primary occupation, not a part-time business.

3.The weekly meetings last for 90-minutes. Members need to arrive on time and stay for the entire meeting.

4.An individual may be a member of only one BNI chapter at any given time.

5.Attendance is critical to the group. If a member cannot attend, he/she may send a substitute (not a member of his/her chapter) to the meeting. This will not count as an absence. A member is allowed three absences every six months (April through September and October through March). After three absences, the member is subject to removal by the chapter’s Leadership Team or Membership Committee.

6.Members are required to bring bona-fide referrals and/or visitors to their BNI chapter. Chapters may establish a minimum number of referrals and/or visitors that is acceptable to maintain membership.

7.Visitors may attend chapter meetings up to two times.

8.Speakers must bring a door prize. Only members bringing a visitor or a referral are eligible for the door prize.

9.There are no leaves of absence except for medical leaves. Members may take up to eight weeks medical leave with the Membership Committee’s prior approval if their fees are pre-paid for that period of time and they attempt to have someone fill in during their leave.

10.It is the members’ responsibility to file a concern with the Membership Committee of their chapter if a visitor in any way conflicts with their classification. This should be done before the visitor is approved for member ship. If there are no complaints, the Membership Committee will “assume” their consent.

11.Members who wish to change their classification must submit a new membership application and get approval from the chapter’s Membership Committee for the classification change.

12.Transferring members must submit a new membership application to the Membership Committee of the chapter to which they are transferring for approval. If approved for transfer, all fees are transferable.

13.In case of problems with a member, Membership Committees may, at their sole discretion, put a member on probation relating to the member’s business practices or commitment to the chapter.

14.Memberships may be revoked for failure to comply with the policies and/or code of ethics of BNI. Membership Committees of any chapter may revoke memberships. In the absence of a Membership Committee, the Leadership Executive Team may fulfill that responsibility.

15.Policies are subject to change. The Leadership Team will be notified regarding all changes.

16.If the Leadership Executive Team members fulfill all responsibilities throughout their term, then they will receive compensation for their fees. A Leadership Executive Team member must agree to the terms outlined in the Leadership Executive Team Agreement in order to hold a position and must go through training before participating.

17.In the absence of a Membership Committee, the Leadership Executive Team may act as an ad hoc Membership Committee until one is established.

18.An individual member cannot belong to a second chapter of BNI nor, any other group that allows only one person per profession and whose primary purpose is to pass referrals to one another, because it substantially reduces their commitment to the chapter members. Membership Committees have full authority in this area.

19.All new members will attend BNI’s Member Success Orientation Program (MSP) in their region within the first 60 days of joining. Only after attending MSP training with the BNI Director, may the new member be added to the "speaker rotation" for that chapter. Failure to attend MSP may result in being dropped from the chapter by the membership committee.

20.All BNI membership lists are for the purpose of ‘giving’ referrals and not for soliciting (i.e., e-mail, direct mail, etc.) members without their prior approval.

BNI is a marketing service provided by BNI Franchise Corporation, and its franchises. BNI or any of its franchises reserves the right to discontinue a member’s participation in this program.

Arbitration: All disputes arising out of or in connection to this Agreement or the member's participation in BNI shall be arbitrated and finally resolved by binding arbitration in accordance with the National Arbitration Rules of Procedure of the ADR Institute of Canada, Inc. The Arbitration will take place in the City and Province in which the member’s BNI Chapter is located. This clause encompasses any and all disputes involving BNI, its franchisee, and their officers, directors, agents and representatives.

Limitations on Liability: Notwithstanding any other provision of this Agreement, any liability to you involving BNI, its franchisee, and their officers, directors, agents and representatives for any cause whatsoever arising out of or related to this Agreement and/or your membership or participation in BNI, and regardless of the form of the action, will at all times be limited to the amount of yearly dues paid by you for the membership in BNI. Except in jurisdictions where such provisions are restricted, in no event will there be any liability to you or any third person for any indirect, consequential, exemplary, incidental, special or punitive damages.

Get Answers on Bni Application

What is the purpose of the BNI Application Form?

The BNI Application Form is designed for new members who wish to join a BNI chapter. It collects necessary information such as your name, business details, and the category you are applying for. This form helps the Membership Committee evaluate your application and ensures that all prospective members meet BNI guidelines.

How much is the membership fee and what does it cover?

The total membership fee is $689.30, which includes an annual fee of $480.00, a registration fee of $130.00, and applicable taxes of $79.30. This fee covers your membership in the BNI marketing system but does not include chapter meal services, which are charged separately by each chapter.

Who can apply to join BNI?

BNI membership is open to individuals who represent a full-time occupation in various professional disciplines. Each chapter allows only one member from each profession to ensure exclusivity and minimize competition within the group.

What happens if I miss a meeting?

Attendance is important in BNI. If you cannot attend a meeting, you may send a substitute person who is not a member of your chapter. This will not count as an absence. However, if you miss more than three meetings in a six-month period without a valid substitute or reason, you could face removal from the chapter.

Can I belong to more than one BNI chapter?

No, individuals are only permitted to belong to one BNI chapter at a time. This policy helps maintain focus and commitment to your chapter’s members and activities.

What if I need to change my classification or transfer to another chapter?

If you wish to change your classification, you must submit a new application and obtain approval from the Membership Committee of your current chapter. For transfers, filling out a new application for the chapter you want to join is necessary; all your fees will be transferable upon approval.

What is the importance of attendance and referrals in BNI?

Regular attendance is vital for the growth and success of a BNI chapter. Members are expected to contribute by bringing referrals or visitors to meetings. Chapters may set minimum expectations for referrals to maintain active membership status. This dynamic fosters networking and enhances business opportunities for all involved.

What happens to my fees if I am not accepted into BNI?

Once you are accepted into BNI, all fees paid are non-refundable without exception. This includes the registration and annual membership fees, so ensure you commit to the responsibilities and policies before submitting your application.

Common mistakes

Completing the BNI application form may seem straightforward, yet many applicants frequently make mistakes that can lead to complications. One common error occurs when individuals fail to provide complete information. In particular, neglecting to fill out all required fields, such as the chapter name or business phone number, can result in delays in processing the application. Ensuring every section is thoroughly completed is crucial for a smooth approval process.

Another frequent oversight is in the section describing the product or service. Applicants often provide vague descriptions instead of specific details. This lack of clarity can hinder the Membership Committee's ability to properly categorize the applicant. A clear and concise description is essential for demonstrating a genuine commitment to the BNI values and goals.

Additionally, mistakes in choosing the payment method can arise. Some applicants may forget to sign their checks or credit card authorization, leading to an incomplete submission. If payment cannot be verified, the application might be held up. Double-checking that all payment details are provided and correctly filled out can prevent unnecessary hurdles.

Many applicants also overlook the necessity of having a sponsor. Failing to include a sponsor's name or not securing a commitment from a current member can lead to automatic disqualification from the membership process. The role of a sponsor is vital in establishing connections within BNI, so it is beneficial to engage with a potential sponsor early in the application process.

Finally, some individuals do not fully commit to the policies outlined in the application. Neglecting to answer questions regarding attendance and participation in meetings adequately can raise red flags. Without a clear demonstration of commitment to BNI's rules, an applicant risks their chances of approval. Fully understanding and agreeing to the policies is part of what members must present to secure a positive response from the Membership Committee.

Documents used along the form

When applying for BNI membership, you may need to submit various supporting documents along with the BNI application form. Each form serves a specific purpose in the application process and helps the Membership Committee assess your candidacy. Below is a list of important documents often required in conjunction with the application.

  • Resume: This document provides a detailed overview of your professional experience, education, and qualifications. It highlights your skills and achievements relevant to your field.
  • Cover Letter: A brief letter introducing yourself and explaining your interest in joining BNI. It sets the tone for your application and allows you to express your motivation clearly.
  • Business References: Often required, this document includes the names and contact information of people who can vouch for your professional demeanor and capabilities within your industry.
  • Proof of Business Ownership: This may include articles of incorporation or a business license that validates your ownership and eligibility to participate in BNI as a representative of your business.
  • Payment Receipt: A document confirming that you have paid the necessary membership fees. This receipt is vital for processing your application.
  • Membership Code of Ethics Agreement: By signing this agreement, you acknowledge that you will adhere to BNI's ethical standards while participating in the organization.
  • Classification Change Forms: If you’re transferring from another chapter or changing your professional classification within BNI, you may need to submit specific forms to document this change.
  • Substitute Delegate Form: If you can't attend meetings, this form designates another person to attend on your behalf, ensuring your commitment to the meetings is maintained.
  • Membership Orientation Confirmation: Upon joining, you will need to confirm your attendance at the Member Success Orientation Program, as this is a requirement for all new members.

Gathering these documents can streamline the application process and provide the Membership Committee with comprehensive information about you and your business. Make sure each document is completed accurately to reflect your qualifications and commitment effectively.

Similar forms

  • Membership Agreement: Like the BNI Application form, a membership agreement outlines the terms and conditions of joining an organization. It specifies rights and responsibilities and typically requires personal information about the applicant.

  • Job Application: The job application collects essential information from candidates seeking employment. Similar to the BNI Application, it requires details such as name, contact information, and work history, and often includes questions about the applicant's fit for the position.

  • Lease Agreement: A lease agreement documents the terms between a landlord and a tenant. Just like the BNI Application, it includes personal details and outlines obligations, making it clear what each party can expect during the lease term.

  • Volunteer Application: This form gathers information from individuals wishing to volunteer with an organization. The volunteer application, similar to the BNI Application, collects personal data and motivations, ensuring suitability for the role.

  • Service Agreement: A service agreement details the terms between a service provider and a client. It mirrors the BNI Application in its requirement for specific personal and business information and outlines the obligations of each party involved in the agreement.

Dos and Don'ts

When filling out the BNI application form, it’s important to pay attention to the following dos and don'ts:

  • Do complete all sections of the application fully and clearly.
  • Do check for any spelling or grammatical errors before submission.
  • Do provide accurate contact information, including all phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Do specify your product or service in detail to give a clear understanding of your business.
  • Don't leave any required fields blank; incomplete applications will likely not be processed.
  • Don't use jargon or technical terms that may confuse the Membership Committee.
  • Don't wait until the last minute to fill out the application; allow time for revisions.
  • Don't forget to sign the application and confirm your payment method.

Misconceptions

1. The BNI application form is complicated and difficult to fill out. Many people think that the application process is overly complex. However, the form is straightforward, requiring basic information about yourself and your business. The questions are designed to understand your qualifications and commitment, making it easier for the Membership Committee to assess your application.

2. Completing the form guarantees membership. Some applicants believe that simply submitting the form will secure their place in a chapter. In reality, the Membership Committee reviews each application. Acceptance is based on availability and alignment with existing member classifications.

3. Payments for membership fees are refundable. It's a common misconception that if an applicant changes their mind, they can get their money back. Once accepted, all fees are non-refundable. This policy emphasizes commitment to the community.

4. Members can attend as many meetings as they want. New members often think they have unlimited access to meetings. While attending as a visitor is allowed, new members must formally join the chapter to participate regularly. Membership entails responsibilities, including attendance requirements.

5. All professions are welcome to join. People may assume that any profession can join BNI. However, only one member per profession is allowed in each chapter. This rule prevents competition within the group and fosters stronger referrals.

6. You can bring anyone as a substitute to meetings. Applicants often misunderstand the substitute policy. While substitutes are allowed if a member cannot attend, they must not be members of the same chapter. This measure reinforces commitment and accountability among members.

7. Membership in BNI doesn’t require contributions. New members might think they can join without actively contributing to the group. In fact, participation is crucial. Members are expected to bring referrals and attend meetings regularly, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

Key takeaways

  • Complete All Sections: Ensure every part of the application form is filled out completely. Accurate and thorough information helps streamline the approval process.
  • Be Specific: When describing your products or services, be as specific as possible. Clear descriptions assist the Membership Committee in understanding your business.
  • Membership Requirements: Remember that only one person per profession can join a chapter. Make sure you're not conflicting with existing members.
  • Attendance Policy: Be prepared to commit to attending weekly meetings. Arriving on time and staying the full duration is crucial for your participation.
  • Referrals are Key: Bringing referrals or visitors to meetings is expected. Review your ability to contribute in this area before applying.
  • Payment Instructions: Choose your payment method wisely, whether personal check, company check, cash, or credit card. All payments should be made payable to BNI.
  • Understanding Fees: Be aware of the subscription fees and ensure you know the total amount due before submitting your application.
  • Medical Leaves of Absence: If you anticipate needing a leave, familiarize yourself with the medical leave policy to avoid issues down the road.
  • Networking Orientation: Once accepted, attend the Member Success Orientation Program within 60 days. This is crucial for integration into the chapter.
  • Confidential Information: Keep in mind that all member information is for referral purposes only and not for solicitation without prior approval.
